Day 1: Disappointment

Disappointment can come in many forms. A timeline of my first day in disappointment catalog form:

A) Disappointment due to the fact that I slept through all of the food options in the SFO-Boston flight.

B) Disappointment that I failed to sleep at all from the 8 hour red-eye flight from Boston to Munich.
I attempted to lean my rigid chair back, only to be viciously kicked by the approximately 6'8" man who was sitting behind me. I turned around to reason with him, but I saw in his British eyes no empathy, only bitterness at whatever forces made him uncomfortably tall for this airplane. He said no words to me, only shook his head from side to side, sealing my sleepless fate.

C) Disappointment that the local delicacy is low-grade beef stuck inside of pita, with a diced onion of all things on the side. I'm sure I'll talk myself into ordering it again, so pictures are to come. I think the best way to describe it with words would be this: It is a food item that I was disappointed in myself for eating (for taste and nutritional reasons), and I truly enjoy Taco Bell Breakfast.

D) Disappointment in the tap water in Sarajevo. Disappointment because Google, as well as a local waitress, told me that the tap water was perfectly fine to drink. Which I did, only to be vigorously laughed at later by our hotel front desk man, who said that under no circumstances should we put that tainted water to our pure American lips. Further updates on this to come.

E) Disappointment that the US Men's Soccer Team couldn't find a way to advance past the round of 16.

F) Disappointment in the wait staff at the outdoor restaurant we were watching the game at that they wouldn't serve us anymore after our 15-deep group sung along to the US national anthem. There is no love for America here from the locals; I would describe it as "angry tolerance."

G) Disappointment in the water in our hotel being shut off after midnight. Yep went to go wash my hands at 12:30 only to find that the water in the hotel we are at is shut off from 12-5 AM.

(Of course its far less fun to write about all of the good things that happened on the first day. Believe it or not I did enjoy myself.)
